Acts 8:2 (KJV)
And devout men carried Stephen to his burial and made great lamentation over him.
Devout men carried Stephen to his burial.
Slain by an angry mob under the consent of Saul, there would have been a considerable risk to associate in any way with Stephen.
Their devotion was not to Stephen
Although I am sure, given the lamentation, that they did care for him.
Their devotion would not have been merely cultural
Or else they would not have had to be devout. Businesses have been established to take care of the dead.
Their devotion was in the cause of Christ
The message Stephen preached caused his death and motivated these believers.
Their lamentation was the same. But, though they wept over the loss of this man of God, their love and passion would have been for the message he preached and the Saviour he loved.
