Romans 14:21 (KJV) High Standards

Romans 14:21 (KJV)

It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.

At least one reason a Christian ought to maintain exceptionally high standards in his Christian walk is his love and care for others.

The weaker Christian is the subject of Romans 14. He has not arrived at a place of grace. Instead, he struggles with rules for righteousness. If he practices grace, he is likely to do so more out of license, giving up on holiness and instead backsliding into worldliness.

We, who know the Lord well, know that He does not judge us based on meat or holy days. He is not concerned with our dress or our gifts. He is not impressed with our performance.

But there are some, saved and lost, who do not understand this. If we do not maintain high standards in our lives, we could quickly become a stumbling block, offend them, and weaken their opportunities to know the Lord as we do.
