Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
Other Scriptures tell us to mark or take note of those who walk contrary[1] to what the Bible teaches. This one tells us to mark the one who walks in obedience to those teachings. We must identify both if we are to guard our hearts for the Lord.
But whenever we do this, we risk hurting those we have so marked. This passage helps us with that.
First, we must weep over those who do not walk obediently.
Our attitude makes a huge difference. We are not to be mean-spirited, self-righteous, or hateful. We don’t have to speak badly of them in any other manner than to note that they do not walk as the Bible teaches.
Second, we ought to discern between those who walk contrary and are the enemies of the cross and those who have not yet learned.
There is a difference between the one who is opposed to and belligerent against the Word of God and he that is growing in the Lord but hasn’t yet grown in a particular area of faith.
I don’t want to hang around someone who is opposed to the work of the Lord. But the one who is teachable is a very good friend to have.
[1] Romans 16:17 (KJV)
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
