Philippians 4:3 (KJV) The Book of Life

Philippians 4:3 (KJV)

And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

Of the many ways to think about our brothers and sisters in the faith, this is one I think we seldom use.  Their names, like ours, are written in the book of life. I can think of several reasons it isn’t one of our everyday practices.

  • We can’t see it like we can their way of life.
  • We can’t hear it like we can their words of faith.

There are some precious thoughts associated with it.
Being written, there was personal effort
The Lord made the choice and effort to write.

Being written, there was individual identity
He wrote their names, not just the title of a group.

Being written, it is permanent
Even when a word is erased, there is some trace of it on the paper.

Our brothers and sisters have their names written in the book of life. Our Lord knows them and cares for them just as He does us. It wouldn’t hurt for us to have their names written too – so that we do not forget that they are our fellow laborers in the Lord.
