Hebrews 12:27 (KJV) What Remains

Hebrews 12:27 (KJV)

And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

I have in my mind right now the sieve and old farmer might have used to sift the chaff from the grain. Or, a similar method with a different product, the pan a miner might use to separate the gold from the rocks and debris. In either case, the lesser, lighter thing is removed by the process of shaking. The heavier, more valuable item is left behind and remains.

God uses this analogy to describe His removal of all that is frivolous and without value. Like the chastening of a child, God works to refine in us and what is around us, the wheat and the gold.

The shaking process often seems violent. We tremble at the thought of the removal of:

  • Our material goods
  • Our earthly home
  • Our mortal life

But what remains once those are gone is the matter of real worth.
