The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:
And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,
Take notice of the contrast between the “crown of pride” and the “crown of glory.”
That crown of pride belonged to what the passage calls “the
drunkards of Ephraim.” Ephraim, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, is often used in the Word of God to refer to those tribes that rebelled against Rehoboam and rejected the kingly line God ordained for them. It’s one thing to believe a certain political party, or a member of that party ought to be replaced. It is quite another to reject the king God ordains, regardless of our opinions.
Pride leads a man to walk away from the plan of God to find his own way.
The crown of glory; that is the Lord of hosts Himself.
- He is glorious
- He is beautiful
- He is right judgment
- He is strength in the battle
A man must humble himself to possess this crown of glory. God will not share Christ with self-will, worldly wisdom, and the good works of man. We must dismiss our pride, our rebellion, and our own way if we would know the glory of having Christ work in and among us.
