The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
I recently heard a preacher illustrate meekness with a news story he had read reporting that “elephant abuse among trainers is on the rise.” If you think about that it seems utterly ridiculous. The elephant has the ability to stomp and maim his trainer at any moment. If he is abused by his trainer, it is because he is surrendered to him. (Also he is given to the will of the Lord who has put in even the wildest of beasts a fear of man.) Once in a while we hear of a wild beast who has no fear of man. That beast, even though in the wild must be put down.
Every one of us has the ability to choose our own way and do contrary to what those authorities God has placed over us say. We can do it. But we can’t do it and remain true to the will of God or remain obedient to the Word of God. Meekness is the surrender of that ability. It is to yield to the master of our lives, even when we believe the direction of the master is contrary to our best interests.
Meekness yields joy. That can hardly be said of either pride or self-will. A person might get away with it just as an angry elephant might kill his trainer. But the end is not going to be good. Joy comes through submission.
