Isaiah 33:6 (KJV) From Whence Stability?

Isaiah 33:6 (KJV)

And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.

I think I see three elements involved in this passage.

  • Stability
  • Strength
  • Treasure

The first audience is thought to be Hezekiah or else the kingdom of Judah under him. It is to be remembered that they were threatened severely under the siege of Sennacherib and Rabshakeh.

  • Strength would come from God’s salvation or deliverance from the enemy.
  • Treasure would not from fear, but be their fear of the Lord.

I am interested in what would give stability.

That was wisdom and knowledge. Wisdom is a gift from God that comes by nothing other than the study, and therefore knowledge, of the Word of God. People who know the Bible well and apply it to life are stable and produce a stable community. It becomes the Christian to contribute to the stability of those God has connected him to by being serious in study and application of the Word of God and, through that, providing wisdom that stabilizes and establishes their church body.
