I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
In a prophecy written decades before his birth, God names Cyrus, promises to strengthen him, raise him to power, and foretells how Cyrus will defeat Babylon. God said He would do all of this even though Cyrus did not know Him.
This prophecy lends itself to granting the believer confidence in the Word of God. Fully one-third of the Bible was written as prophecy, a foretelling of future events. Approximately three-quarters of those prophecies have been fulfilled exactly as they were foretold in the Bible. Only a fool would bet that the remaining one quarter will fail to come to pass. Therefore, we have every reason to believe the Bible.
There is also a practical lesson concerning the nature of God and His affairs in this world. He does not require that a person knows God personally for God to use the person for the will of God. The Bible indicates that God knew Cyrus so intimately that it was He who called Cyrus by name.
We might look around us and wonder how God could possibly work in a world so filled with unbelievers. God is more than capable. Just as God worked in Cyrus, a man who did not know the Lord, for Jacob’s sake, we can find assurance that God will work in this world among these dogged unbelievers for the Christians’ sake.
