Isaiah 48:2 (KJV) Not What It Seems

Isaiah 48:2 (KJV)

For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name.

Some things look impressive until a little more research is conducted. This verse appears to be a compliment to the people of the Lord.

  • They call themselves of the holy city.
  • They claim to belong to that place God made His own
  • They stay themselves upon the God of Israel.
  • They claim that their trust, faith strength come from Him
  • They clarify it is the Lord of Hosts.
  • They claim they worship the only true and living God.

But then we remember verse one.

Isaiah 48:1 (KJV)
Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.

None of it was in truth or righteousness.

The warning here is of the deception of our heart. We can believe we have everything right with God but be as far from God as possible.

It doesn’t matter what we claim, where we frequent, or who we name. What matters is truth and righteousness and that will only be found within the pages of the Word of God.
