They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:
It is likely that none of us put as much emphasis on the command to bring our children up in the nurture and the admonition of the Lord as we ought. It’s also likely, I would argue, that this contributes much to the declining state of Christianity. Even among those children who remain believers into adulthood, they are prone to transition to a faith with much less conviction and truth.
We either, as parents, ignore our children’s Christian nurture, or else offer them up in worldly activities and humanist philosophy. I would argue that what we do today, though not so grotesque as offering our children as sacrifices,[1] is not too far different than offering them to a false god.
Notice the progression of thought God has concerning such child sacrifice.
- He did not command our children be offered to other gods.
- He did not speak of it in principle
- He did not even think it
The offering of our children to any god other than the Living God is so repulsive that God says He would not bear to allow the thought in His mind.
And yet we are too quick to accept the world’s assessment that children belong, not to the parents but to the community, and therefore the community has the right and responsibility to bring them up in the education of the world. We offer our children to that system and, very often lose them to it.
[1] We do that too in the form of abortion. Men and women worship their lusts and then slay, in the most brutal manner, the product of their disobedience to God’s Word.
