The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;
Whilst their children remember their altars and their groves by the green trees upon the high hills.
There are three warnings that I can see taken from these verses concerning our sin and our children.
Our children observe and remember our sin
Parents beware. You are not able to hide your sin from your kids. You may believe you’ve hidden it from your friends. You might think you’ve hidden it from your church. I promise; you have not hidden it from God or your children. They see, and they remember.
Our children most often copy and amplify our sin
Someone said, “What a parent does in moderation, their children will do to excess.” This explains, in part, the declination of spiritual peoples such as the Jews. Your children too often copy your sins. Far too often, they take your sins farther than you would ever have considered.
Our sin influences our children’s relationship with God
They watch us in our homes and in private times. They listen to us in our conversations. They speculate on what our whispers might mean. They know the real us. They know if our walk with God is real. They know if it is shallow. They know if it matters to us. They know, remember, and judge God based not on what we tell them to believe but, on what they have observed us to believe.
Blame the large numbers of young people who walk away from Christianity on anything you please. The plain truth is many, if not most, of them walk away because they remember the sins of their parents.
