Mark 15:19 (KJV) This Worship Isn’t

Mark 15:19 (KJV)

And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

The Bible says that after beating and spitting upon our Saviour, the soldiers who had captured Jesus knelt and worshipped Him.

Consider
They were before the correct entity
Jesus Christ is worthy of worship. While it is a sin to worship an idol, it is not a sin to worship Jesus. It is a sin to worship any creature; whether it be animal angels or man, it is a sin to worship them. It is not sin to worship Jesus.

They were at the correct place
The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, an event they were in the midst of, purchases the soul from death and frees us of sin.

They were in the correct posture
Modern Christianity thinks of worship as lifting hands, singing praise songs, and perhaps dancing up and down or swaying side to side. Worship is, in fact, an act of submission and humility. To bow and kneel is the correct posture of worship.

But the context tells us that what these men did was not Christ honoring worship.

Here’s my point.
It is possible to worship and not glorify the Lord in it. The example in our text is extreme. Perhaps you don’t know anyone doing anything near as these soldiers did. But worship offered to the correct entity, at the correct place, and in the correct posture still doesn’t glorify the Lord if it lacks humility of soul, obedience to the Word of God, and genuine faith in Him.
