Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.
I can just hear the accusations thrown at Jeremiah.
“Don’t be so cynical!”
“Nobody likes a cynic!”
The fact was, Jeremiah was correct. He wasn’t looking at the glass half empty. He was looking at it for what it was.
I do not imagine that every soul in Jerusalem would utterly supplant and slander. But I do expect that it was a common trait in his time.
Here’s the thing, a positive message will often ignore the problem until the problem reaches deadly or irreversible proportions. To ignore the so-called cynic is to do so at terrible peril. I think our country may be in the shape it is because too many Christians have focused on the positives (or on select negatives) so as to produce what was, in their minds, a positive outcome.
We are too busy trying to pick fruit and not nearly busy enough seeking and then speaking the truth of the Bible.
