John 20:9 (KJV) Have You Read the Words of This Book?

John 20:9 (KJV)

For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

Consider the characters of this chapter

  • Mary Magdalene
  • Peter
  • John
  • The assembled disciples (excluding Thomas)
  • The assembled disciples (including Thomas)

These were the closest people to the Lord. These were the ones the Gospels speak of as loving the Lord, having heard all His messages. This was a woman whose love for the Lord had her at His sepulcher before daylight the first day of the week (the first day she could be there after the Passover week). These were the people who had personal extended conversations with Jesus about His, death, and resurrection.

And yet this chapter has verses such as:
John 20:2 (KJV)
Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

John 20:9 (KJV)
For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

John 20:13-14 (KJV)
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

John 20:24-25 (KJV)
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

We are wise to be humble about our understanding of the Word of God.
John 20:9 (KJV)
For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

We have reason to be faithful to the house of God
John 20:24-25 (KJV)
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

We may rejoice that the Lord is not satisfied to leave us lingering in questions

  • John believed when he saw the empty tomb
  • Vs 8
  • Mary believed when she spoke with Jesus at the tomb
  • Vs 16
  • The disciples believed when the saw His hands and His side
  • Vs 20
  • Thomas believed when Jesus appeared for his benefit
  • Vs 28

We may believe because we have read the words of this book
John 20:30-31 (KJV)
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
