This is a curious text. Nicodemus had said that he believed Jesus to be a teacher come from God because of the miracles He had performed.
Up to this point, we only know specifically of one miracle, the water to wine. There is a hint that Jesus had done miracles at the Passover in Jerusalem, but the Bible does not even so much as tell us what they are. We only know He overturned the tables there.
Now here is Nicodemus. He comes to Jesus with something to say about the miracles. Jesus, for all practical purposes, ignored the miracles. He didn’t get into some teaching moment about the miracles, what they were and what they meant. He went right to the heart of the matter, “Except a man be born again…”
This is the heart of all matters spiritual. It is likely the heart of all matters, period. “Except a man be born again” all else matters little.
We likely spend far too little time speaking on this subject. Perhaps we are too quick to assume we have a handle on it.
We just do not understand what God is doing if we have not been born again.
