His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
One commentary writes, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it, not questioning the reasonableness of the command, or its fitness to accomplish the end proposed.”
This is an appropriate work of a servant. It is not theirs to question. It is not theirs to reason. It is not theirs to choose which portions of their commands they will obey. It is theirs to do.
- A servant does what he is told
- A servant does what he is told when he told
- A servant does how much ever he is told
- A servant does what he is told where he is told
In this instance, the servants’ instructions came through another. Jesus’ mother gave them this instruction with an expectation that they would do what she said of them and that Jesus would use what they did for good purposes.
I see the witness for Christ is her role. We urge people to do what the Word of God says, whatsoever the Word of God says. We pray that those we encourage thusly will heed our urgings. And we believe that whosoever will heed and do as the Word of God says will be blessed and be a blessing.
