For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
There are three Biblical components in this passage:
The law
It was brought into this world through Moses. Before Christ, souls anxiously looked forward to their redemption and expressed their faith through the keeping of the law.
Grace
The gift of God which is both through and by Jesus Christ. Jesus is the gift of God. Jesus is also the channel by which we receive the graces God intends for us.
Truth
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. The New Testament believer looks back to their redemption on the cross. We express our faith by walking in the truth.
The Old Testament Word of God is true, but it is not complete. Jesus Christ finishes the truth for us in the New Testament.
- The answer to the law is grace
- The acceptance of grace reveals truth
