John 5:47 (KJV) Believing You Believe Is Not The Same As Believing

John 5:47 (KJV)

But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

This account began with the Jews using the Word of God, as they presumed, delivered by Moses, to judge the healed man. He was sitting at the pool of Bethesda. I imagine that had the water stirred and he could have done so, he would have scrambled to be the first one in the water to be healed. I imagine that, had he been healed, he would have come away rejoicing. And I imagine that, even if this has happened on the Sabbath, the Jews would have been happy for him.

As it was, they saw him carrying his bed on the sabbath.
That, they had determined, was not lawful. The cured man simply replied that the one who had healed him told him to carry it.

At this point attention shifted from the man carrying his bed on the sabbath to the one who had healed him on the sabbath.
Perhaps it was reasonable to carry his bed, having just been healed. But healing him on the sabbath, that must be considered a form of work.

Having found Jesus, and hearing Him make Himself equal with God, these Jews were beside themselves.
They believed they had the Word of God on their side.

It was to these men who were so sure they knew, believed, and obeyed the Word of God that Jesus said “if ye believe not his writings.”

The warning is very simple. It is quite possible to believe we know the Bible, and believe we obey the Bible, without truly believing the Bible.
