Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
It’s important to recognize that Peter did not say, “Where shall we go?” Instead, he said, “To whom shall we go?”
Here is a hard truth to swallow but essential if we are ever to succeed, both in this life and the next. We all follow someone. To reject one authority in our life is to automatically and immediately embrace another. One man will argue, “I am the master of my destiny. Oh fool, and blind! To embrace self as god is to embrace Satan as the same. It was his ploy to deceive Eve into choosing for herself.
- The child follows its parents
- The student follows his teacher
- The employee follows his foreman
- The citizen follows the laws of the land
- The soul follows Christ into eternity or everything else into hell and the Lake of Fire
The most foolish thing a person may do is reject authority because they ultimately reject Christ. Therefore, the most compassionate thing a parent can do is to train their children early to submit to authority and to recognize what godly authority is.
The wise realize that we are natural followers. Therefore, they choose to follow Christ rather than be led by others.
