Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
I understand the context. The Jews claimed God was their Father. Jesus contended that their deeds, their actions revealed that they had a different Father. They would have recognized Jesus as the Saviour if God had been their Father. They would have followed the Lord Jesus. They would have turned to Him in repentance if God had been their Father. As it was, they denied Jesus was the Messiah of God, oppressed those who followed Jesus, and sought to kill Jesus. These were the deeds of their true father, the devil.
I’m thinking about the importance of the father in the home. We live in a society today where violence is on the rise. Drug use is out of control. Gangs dominate the urban (and many suburban) neighborhoods, and homelessness pervades every major population center. Politicians and sociologists are at a loss to solve the problems. Humanitarians and philanthropists want to throw money at the problem.
But the issue will not be resolved until we return to a solid family unit—a man and a woman; a dad and a mother, raising their children together.
Kids who grow up with their fathers will most likely do as their fathers taught them.
Would this solve every problem in society? Of course not. But it would lead to a major step in the right direction.
