Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
Imagine the stress Stephen under which must have been.
- He had been “caught” and brought before the council
- He had been accused by those who had heard him and those they conspired with to testify against him
- He had been challenged by no less than the high priest
- He was well aware of what had happened to Jesus
“Are these things so?”
A lesser man would have struggled to grunt out one word.
Rather than attempting to defend his life, Stephen took up an immediate sermon. It’s remarkably similar to the one Peter had preached at Pentecost and, like the one Paul would preach in the future, a recitation of the critical points of Old Testament history, leading to Jesus. Stephen’s call to action was to point out that these people, the very ones whom he stood before, killed the Saviour preached throughout the Word of God.
Composure such as this was irrefutable evidence that he was a man full of the Holy Ghost, and of God’s Word.
Would to God we had more like him today.
It would be really good if some of them were deacons.
