I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.
The word decree is found eight times in Daniel, chapter six.[1]
The critical point, driven home repeatedly in the chapter, is that once the king had made a decree,
according to the law of the Medes and Persians, cannot be changed. Once Daniel had survived the night, the king made a decree that the whole kingdom tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. But here’s the thing, how would he possibly make that decree stick? It is impossible to make people tremble and fear God. They may tremble and fear the king’s decree. They might fear the gossip and accusations of others, but no one can decree faith in God.
- Constantine attempted it. It created a monster religion that has plagued the world for two thousand years.
- Catholicism attempted it. There were always people who saw past their false doctrine and sought the truth in God’s Word
Individual soul liberty, the right to worship God according to the dictates of one’s consciousness, is not merely a Baptist doctrine; it is an incontrovertible fact of the spiritual nature.
Darius’ decree in this passage held no more power than the one his administration had tricked him into signing.
God is the living God. Only His decrees will stand.
