Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
A distinctive of the Lord’s Apostles is that they had seen Jesus Christ after His resurrection. Paul may have seen Him before His cross, but multitudes, including Pontius Pilate and Herod and seen Him then. Jesus was seen, after His resurrection, of more than 400 people at once, so it wasn’t the only distinctive, but it was one that Paul could claim and most could not. Paul saw the glorified Christ:
- At his conversion along the Damascus road
- While in a trance at Jerusalem
- At Corinth, when God assured him He had “much people in this city.”
- In the castle where the chief captain put him
- Onboard ship in the storm
- When he was caught up to the third heaven
The Apostles were all chosen of God to be eyewitnesses of what they had seen. Their witness has been published in the Word of God.
Our place, our calling, is to take that message, as it is recorded in the Bible, to the world.
