Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.
It is one of the noblest ideas of humanity.[1] That the soul is at liberty to seek God of one’s conscience is such an ideal, it is, I think, the zenith of man’s person. Only the despot would deny it of another.
And yet it is such a difficult one to practice. To care for others without manipulating them is an ideal for which to reach, but it may be the most difficult of any to attain.
Romans 14 gives powerful helps to make this a part of our faith.
- Receive others without doubtful disputations
- Accept them without arguing over everything
- Allow him to live and die before the Lord
- After all, it is to him he and we will give account
- Be persuaded by the Lord Jesus[2]
- Have faith to self and before God
I would suggest that the focus of the entire chapter is to judge only that we put no stumbling block in a brother’s way. That’s a tall order for sure!
[1] Truly, it is not an idea of man, but a message from God.
[2] Such persuasion will give confidence. Confidence provides strength to stand without disputing.
