Zechariah 1:5 (KJV) No One Lives Forever

Zechariah 1:5 (KJV)

Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

The prophet began by challenging them not to be like their fathers. Why? Because their fathers had not listened to the prophets. The trouble Judah had endured, the captivity in Babylon, the destruction of the magnificent temple Solomon had constructed, the loss of the treasures of the temple, namely the ark, all that harm and loss were the direct result of their fathers’ rejection of the prophets.

Now their fathers were dead.
Their fathers’ decisions affected them, but they were no longer there to correct their sins or accept the consequences. It fell to the current generation to make right what their fathers had made wrong.

The prophets of their fathers’ days were gone as well.

Obviously, God still had prophets among them. Zechariah and Haggai would have been in that number. But they would not live forever. Their opportunity to repent, turn to God, and follow the preaching of God’s Word was limited. It was theirs to do, but they must do it quickly.

And so it is with us. It falls on us not to blame our fathers or to follow them but to turn to and trust God while it is today.

Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow is for another.
Ours is to come to God today.
