Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
The Word of God, in this chapter, uses three personalities to demonstrate the truth it wishes to present concerning the promise of God.
The first is Abraham of the Jews
Vs. 1-5
This is the picture the typical Jew would have had of Abraham as the father of the people of the Jews. I say it is the Jews because Paul includes himself, a Jew.
The second is David
Vs. 6-8
Abraham and David, together with Moses, rank up there as the greatest of Jewish heroes.
The third is Abraham before the Jews
Vs. 9-25
The contrast between the first and the second
Abraham is meant to be startling. The typical Jew likely forgets that Abraham was not always circumcised and was not for most of the years of his life. Abraham was made righteous before God before his circumcision.
All of this to demonstrate that the promise of God is:
- Of faith
- By grace and
- Sure to all
