That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
The doctrine of election is such a convoluted subject in the world of Christianity.
I think it is so because:
First, many Christians have a wrong view of church.
This leads to severe misinterpretations of crucial passages.
Second, too many want to make election about just one thing.
What if God makes choices about more than just salvation?
Third, the sin nature positions itself as judge over God.
We want to decide what God can decide.
As I understand the Scriptures, the doctrine of election is this simple:
God has elected that all should be saved
Christ died for all so that all may be saved. The sad fact is that too many choose not to be saved.
God has elected that such as come to Him by promise receive mercy.
Those who choose to come some other way receive wrath. This is the gist of Romans chapter nine. Too many attempt some other way.
God has elected that those who are saved, whether Jews or Gentile, be United in one new man, a local church.
This is the message of Ephesians. Unfortunately, too few professing believers become gracious, unified, and contributing members of this new man.
God has elected some of those who get saved to be separated as preachers of the Gospel.
All Christians are called to be witnesses. Some are separated to be pastors, teachers, and evangelists.
