And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
Among the Calvinists, there is a phrase, “hopefully converted.” They don’t view anyone as genuinely saved until they have persevered to death. The Calvinist, though stubbornly claiming to hold to the absolute sovereignty of God, rest the whole matter of salvation upon the works of the sinner.
I find it interesting, then, that Paul says of the Corinthians his hope of them was steadfast.
- He was confident that they were saved.
- He expected that they were saved.
- He had no question that they were saved.
This hope was of the church’s people he had only recently corrected harshly. He was concerned they might not respond well to his rebukes, but he was not concerned they about their salvation.
There was a faction in the church Paul challenged concerning their faith. There is such a thing as a false profession of faith. But one who is saved is saved for certain. There is no reason for us to be skeptical and cynical. Salvation is of the Lord. Since He is sure, so is salvation.
