And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
I was impressed to see that the entirety of Genesis, chapters twenty-three and twenty-four, is taken up with the underlying theme of Sarah’s passing. Some people believe Christianity is a “male-based religion.” It’s the farthest thing from the truth. Nothing in human history has elevated women higher than has the Christian faith. Satan hates everything that God created. The non-biblical philosophies of feminism, modernism, and equal rights have done nothing but destroy the beauty that is womanhood.
Genesis twenty-three is taken with the business of burying Sarah. I say business because that is what it is. It’s a lucrative one at that. I notice that Abraham had no desire to “save a buck” in the business. It’s a significant event. It would have long-term consequences because several generations would use this same plot of land to bury their dead.
Genesis twenty-four is taken up with a wife for Isaac. It seems like that would be the focal point. But the chapter ends by saying the entire episode resulted in Isaac being comforted after his mother’s death. Comfort in the inevitable times of death is found,
- In the hope of eternal life in Christ
- In the practical nature of caring for this necessary event and
- In the prospect of God’s promises to future generations
