Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
The Egyptians were in a quandary. The Jews had multiplied in number to the place they were a problem. The situation, as they saw it, was that the Jews might take the side of an enemy, join them, and affect their escape.
The thing is, the Jews did not belong in Egypt. They had a homeland of their own. They had come to the land as guests. The host Pharaoh had long since passed away. In our terminology, the Jews had overstayed their welcome.
Perhaps they had sold themselves to Pharaoh along with the Egyptian people during the great famine. I doubt it. It may be that over the centuries, four of them, the Egyptians and the Jews, just assumed they were possessions of the state along with everyone else.
One easy solution to the Jews would have been to invite them to go home. But Pharaoh didn’t want that either. He had grown accustomed to their productivity and industry.
His problem? He couldn’t live with them, and he couldn’t live without them.
The Jews had been invited into Egypt to save them from a famine. They just never returned home. It might have seemed uncomfortable to do so. It might have been more difficult at home than in the good land of Goshen. Whatever the reason for staying, it had turned into a bad deal. After four hundred years, the people living in the Promised Land wouldn’t have been happy to see them come home.
There is little way to avoid the trappings of worldliness. They can seem comfortable, even like a blessing. In some respects, they are necessary. But for the Christian, it is best to view them all as temporary. We must never hold onto anything on this earth too tightly.
