And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.
I love the word “gather” and all its various forms in the Word of God. God must love it too. Seriously, it’s found no less than five times in this chapter. Four hundred sixty-eight times in the Bible.
- It is what the Lord will do when He calls believers to heaven.
- It is one of the descriptions of a local church.
In that context, Jacob’s words serve as a precursor to a church service. Jacob:
- Called to his sons
- Urged them to gather together and
- Told them what would happen in the last days
Church services are organized.
A time and place are set.
Church services are for the sons of God
The whole of the body is urged to attend. Unsaved
people are invited, and we surely pray they will be saved. But they are not the reason for the assembly of God’s house.
Church services are for preaching
Ultimately every message is addressed to the future. We are to speak to the character of man to provoke them to prepare to meet God.
