And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
Pharaoh offered the best of the land to Israel in verse six. In verse eleven, they accept and take possession of it.
Things seemed as if they had worked out well. What Joseph’s brothers meant for evil, God meant for good. Israel would be protected and saved, even blessed, in Egypt. I can hear the rejoicing, the shouting of “amen,” the giving of thanks, the testimonies of God’s goodness.
But we know the end of the story. No matter how well we think we have it in this world, it is not and never will be our home. The prince of the power of the air rules in the hearts of unbelieving men. While the tide comes and goes, and we must make our way in this world, it is never wise to be too comfortable here. Sooner or later, there will be a king who knows not Joseph.[1]
Our hope is in things eternal, heavenly, not made with hands.
As difficult as it is to maintain our focus on that hope, we are in the best place when that is our place.
[1] Exodus 1:8 (KJV)
Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
