For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
It is a wickedness of the false teachers that they “allure through the lusts of the flesh”; those that were “clean escaped from them.” Nevertheless, it’s also a service. It reveals the dogs and the swine who live among the sheep.[1]
I think this passage can be laid in parallel with Matthew 13:18-23 (KJV)
Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Those who can be lured away, lured back to live among them who live in error, are those who never were of us. 1 John 2:19 (KJV)
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Just as the offender is without excuse even though we can’t live without offenses,[2] so the false teacher is without excuse even though he performs the service of revealing the wantonness of the flesh.
- He is without excuse.
- So is the one who is allured through him.
[1] 2 Peter 2:22 (KJV)
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
[2] Matthew 18:7 (KJV)
Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
