Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
It seems to me that the two great commandments Christ gave[1] us may both have their foundation in this chapter.
Deuteronomy 10:20 (KJV)
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.
- Instead of heart, soul, and mind, it is serve, cleave and swear
- Instead of neighbor, it is stranger
The Jews woefully dropped the ball of loving the stranger. It was the transgression of this commandment that compelled them to arrest Paul. Paul simply obeyed the Word of God. He loved the stranger and sought to win them to the Lord.
In the heart of the Christian, there ought to be a yearning to reach out to the stranger, the one who is new in the congregation, the one who is alone. We’ve all been there and have been helped by those who helped us.
Shall we, who claim to love the Lord, do less for others?
[1] Matthew 22:36-40 (KJV)
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
