All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.
I am thinking of the phrase “observe to do.” It’s almost a double emphasis. Although the Hebrew words translated “observe” and “do” are not related, the sense of the two of them is similar, if not equal. Indeed, the word “observe” is frequently used as a synonym for do.
- To observe is to watch, protect, and to keep.
- To do is to fulfill, practice, and to keep
The lesson is this simple; we will not keep God’s commandments unless we keep God’s commandments.
- We must watch, if we would fulfill God’s commandments
- We must practice, if we would fulfill God’s commandments
A sober lesson learned from Israel is that they did not take care to keep God’s commandments and quickly slipped away.
The good news is God. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Jesus did: carefully, completely, and perfectly kept the commandments of God.
Through the sacrifice of Christ, all who will come to Him are made righteous in Him.
