Joshua 5:1 (KJV) Were, But No Longer

Joshua 5:1 (KJV)
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

One of the distinctives of the King James Version of the Bible is the use of italicized words to designate words that are not physically in the Greek text of the Bible but that the translators believed were necessary to convey the fullness of the text. The translators placed those words in italics for the sake of transparency. It’s foolish, in my view, to try to read the Word of God without them. I believe they are every bit as inspired, infallible, and God-breathed as the rest of the Word of God because they are IMPLIED in the Greek text and REQUIRED in the English.

In the case of this passage, the italics serve to emphasize another point in the text.

  • The Amorites were on the side of Jordan westward and
  • All the kings of the Canaanites were by the sea

Were, but are there no longer.

By the time the book of Joshua was recorded, these nations, God had commanded Israel to drive away, were removed. They were gone. They were in these places at one time, but by this time they were gone.

This is a record of progress. It is a record of change. It marks for all who read what God does with a people who step out in obedience to Him.

Live for God. Trust Christ to save you. Be baptized into the membership of a sound scriptural Baptist church, open your Bible, learn it, and obey it, and there will come a day when you look back and see what once was but no longer is, all because God changed you.

Israel never did obey God perfectly, so there was always an enemy to pester them. So it is with us. We never get things quite right, and we won’t until we get to heaven. But it’s a promise that if you step out in obedience to God, there will be changes in your life where once there were sins, sorrows, and sadness, they will be no longer.
