Joshua 21:44 (KJV)
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
Rest is one of my favorite Bible promises. Gill points out that this rest would have been:
Rest from travels
Having been wearied from forty years of wandering. The nomadic way of life was finally at an end.
Rest from war
Having essentially defeated the Canaanites. Albert Barnes writes, “At the time referred to in the text, the Canaanites were discouraged, broken in strength, holding fast in isolated spots only up and down the land in the very midst of the tribes of God’s people. The conquest of Canaan was already “ex parte Dei” a perfect work.”
For us, this rest is with God
Through Christ the enmity, caused by sin, has been reconciled. God is our Father, and we may come boldly to His throne.
