And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
- Every parent wishes it for their children
- Every politician promises it to their citizens
- Every patriot fights for it for their country
- The hippies and even Martin Luther King protested for it in the sixties
Peace
But there is a problem with peace.
There was a generation after Joshua that “had not known all the wars of Canaan.” The Bible goes so far as to say they “knew nothing thereof.” It’s a parent’s dream that their children would live in peace and know nothing at all about war. That they would get along with everyone around them, what a wonderful prospect!
The problem was that they got along so well that they not only had peace with them, they dwelt among them, and then they married them. And then they served their false gods with them. And then they did evil in the sight of the Lord.
It seems like it would be a wonderful thing to live in peace. But we live in a world corrupt with sin. It is our place; it is necessary that we engage in combat with sin.
To live too long at ease and in peace always leads to a compromise with the world, a decline in righteousness, and ultimately a forsaking of God.
