And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
- Because Israel did evil, God delivered them to the Midianites
- Because of the Midianites, Israel made dens, caves, and strongholds
I suppose one could argue I am making too much of this and give examples of the opposite. What I see here is that the urge to seek places of shelter is the result of choosing to do evil.
No doubt the Midianites were a terrible threat, and finding some place of shelter was a logical choice, given that threat. But the threat would not have existed had they not first done evil.
It seems to me that we are becoming increasingly prone to “shelter in place.” Whether it is:
- A storm off the coast
- A virus in the air or
- A criminal element in the neighborhood
People are increasingly afraid to go out and more prone to lock themselves in.
Risk-taking is becoming a thing of the past. Seeing an obstacle as a “mountain to climb” is being replaced with viewing it as an impenetrable barricade. Neighborhoods are becoming so dangerous that the police now advise honest citizens to protect their things rather than to prevent the crimes. Even the Christian Law Association seems to have changed from defending Christians practicing their faith to teaching Christians how to avoid getting in trouble for their faith.
It is wise and prudent to construct ways to protect ourselves in this wicked world.
I merely wish to point out that much of the cause of this wickedness has resulted from our own evil. How we need a call to return to the LORD. He alone can make us to dwell in safety.
