And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
“And seeing the multitudes…”
Those were difficult days in Israel.
The government was under the thumb of Rome.
- Roman soldiers
- Roman leadership and
- Roman influence
permeated the city. It would have been humiliating nationally and distressing spiritually. Israel, a nation proud of their heritage and believing they had spiritual justification for it, were dominated – by Gentiles.
The Temple was divided
There were at least three sects among the Jews: Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes. There were likely zealots in all three sects. The Temple was not what it once was, and though it was impressive, the discerning had to have been burdened that it was an Edomite who had commissioned its construction.
The people were spiritually blind
This is plainly true, given that they could not see the Messiah so long promised them even when He walked among them.
Jesus saw this messed up multitude and delivered to them the Sermon on the Mount.
- He did not lead a campaign to drive away the Romans
- He did not rally them to resist authority
He preached
- He gave them the Word of God
- He called them to a higher standard of living
Preachers today would do well to do the same.
