Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.
Neither Jonathan nor his armourbearer was cowardly. In my understanding of the passage, the plan of the two was not to ask God whether they should take on the garrison but how.
Jonathan proposes that they “discover” themselves. Once they had made themselves known to the enemy, it was not a question of whether they would fight. That was on! The question was whether they would stand their ground as the enemy attacked or advance upon the enemy’s ground.
The answer was the latter. These two men of faith slew the enemy ten to one. God aided in sending an earthquake. The Philistines were put to flight.
Jonathan proposed they discover themselves without knowing if God would give them victory. That wasn’t the issue. The thing was that the enemy had to be confronted. The situation could not continue. Praise the Lord for those who see a need, step out in faith, and trust God for whatever outcome He pleases.
