And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
I find it interesting that Saul and his soldiers felt liberty to spare what they judged to be the best of the Amalekites.
God had said to destroy them utterly. They were to make no judgments. They were to view each one equally. They were to treat each one on the same level. God was the judge, not the Hebrews. Their error and sin were in part precipitated by their presumption to make a judgment.
Samuel was as prone to this problem as Saul and his soldiers.
In 1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
When seeking out the man after God’s own heart to replace Saul, Samuel looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” God’s response was one of rebuke. God was not interested in countenance or stature. Samuel, just as Saul had, was looking on the outward appearance.
Too often, we are guilty of making the same judgments concerning those whom the Lord would love. It’s not a man’s countenance, physical, social, or economic stature that matters. The fact is we are called to “utterly minister” to them all. Ours is not to determine who is and isn’t worthy of our ministry. Ours is to reach everyone we can, regardless of appearance. The Lord, after all, sees their hearts.
