And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!
Three kings in the same circumstance but each with a different response.
The king of Israel
Fretful - he’s blaming God for their problem. If they are defeated, it will be, in his mind, the LORD’s fault.
The king of Edom
Stoic - according to Gill, he wasn’t rightfully a king but a vassal. He had no voice in going to the conflict. He had nothing to say about going through the hardship.
The king of Judah
Prayerful - he knew that there was an Authority greater than anything in this world. Rather than panicking or pouting, he called for a prophet and began praying.
Life happens to all of us.
· Sometimes it’s of our own doing
· Sometimes it’s out of our control
· Sometimes it’s because of our care for others
The lost man might be stoic and fatalistic.
He sees no hope and no reason to look for help. He just does what he must.
The religious man might blame God for his troubles.
If God loves him, why won’t He solve his problems for him?
The believer always finds a reason for hope.
He doesn’t win every battle. He doesn’t find water in every trench. But he knows that God is always there, always good, and anxious to hear our prayers.
Whatever the outcome, trusting God is the surest way to live in victory.
