But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
I believe Christians have lived in such a high reputation in America that we have lost the reality of the Word of God.
Unbelieving people have always sought to make the minds of the world around us “evil affected against the brethren.”[1] In Ezra 8:31, there were those who “lay wait by the way.”[2]
Again, the reality is that, since we are men of like passions, those who lay wait will find something about us with which to stir up others and make their minds evil affected against us. Often, what they find will be, at least in part, true.
Peter taught us 1 Peter 4:15-16 (KJV)
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.
Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
Indeed, we must not be careless with our testimony. But, neither ought we to be excessively concerned with the twisted accusations of evil minds.
[1] For those who might offer the rebuttal that our accusers are also Christians, remember that many of those who accused Ezra and Nehemiah claimed to also be fellow worshipers.
[2] Ezra 8:31 (KJV)
Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
