But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
Individual Soul Liberty
As early as the day of Job, the Word of God expressed the doctrine of individual soul liberty. (The Baptist distinctives are Bible doctrines that only Baptists have come to see and embrace.)
Think of Bildad as a Protestant. Scofield’s Notes likens him to the one who relies on tradition. Though the earliest Protestants, those who brought about the Reformation, were heavily persecuted for differing views than their mother Catholic Church, they learned no lesson. As soon as they found themselves free of her, they oppressed and persecuted those different from them. Indeed, they never came out of Catholicism but only tried to reform her with their protests.
So here is Bildad, the Protestant persecuting Job. Job’s response is one of individual soul liberty. To paraphrase, Job says, “Why would you persecute the man who is different than you? The root of the matter is his own. Just as you, He will stand before God and give an account for himself.”
