Psalms 36:8 (KJV) Between the Wicked and the Righteous

Psalms 36:8 (KJV)

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

I’d like to highlight the contrast in this Psalm between the righteous and the wicked.

The Psalm begins with the wicked
Psalms 36:1-2 (KJV)
The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.

The wicked “flattereth himself.” He sees his deeds as satisfying; He judges for himself what is right and wrong. He has no standard, no measure except himself. In this state, he continues a decline until his iniquities and sins are grievous and hateful.

I think of the French Revolution as an example. The nobility were wanton and excessive. The commoners were unguided and immoral. It led to the debauchery France is noted for to this day. Tragically it also led to the deaths of France’s leaders. In an attempt to make execution more “humane,” a Frenchman invented the guillotine. A painful irony is that the inventor was himself executed on his own invention.

On the other hand, the Bible says of the Righteous
Psalms 36:8 (KJV)
They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

Our satisfaction is heavenly, not earthly, but it results in a civil, kind, loving, and productive life.

I think of the English revivals as an example. The revivals in England and the American continent were, arguably, in partial response to the same conditions that existed in France. The revivals contributed heavily to the War for Independence. There was bloodshed and death. Sin always ends in death. But the result was countless souls, saved large numbers of churches established, the nobility of England not executed but put in check, and the founding of what most people believe is the crowning point of human government, the United States of America.

Between Psalms 36:1-2 and Psalms 36:8 is,
Psalms 36:5-6 (KJV)
Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.
Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast.

The mercy of God makes the difference between the one who flatters himself into ever deeper decline and the one who is eternally satisfied in the river of God’s pleasures.

I beg of you, do not be flattered another day. Lean upon the mercy of God. Find the abundance of satisfaction in Him.
