Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
I view this Psalm (and prayer) as a kind of “inverted bell curve,” sometimes called a “well curve.”
The Psalm begins with a high point in Jacob (Israel).
Vs. 1-3
Psalms 85:1 (KJV)
LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.
It is impossible to determine precisely when and exactly what blessings the Psalmist refers to. Barnes notes, “There were in the Jewish history, as there have been in the Christian church, numerous occasions to which the sentiments of the psalm would be appropriate.”
We, like Israel, have seen high and low points. The Psalmist simply based his prayer on one of those times in the past. God had shown them favor in the past. He was asking for God to show favor once again.
There is an immediate drop to a low point
Vs. 4-5
Psalms 85:5 (KJV)
Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?
Things have worsened, and we wonder if God will be angry forever. I mused this morning of the days of Noah when it repented God that He had made man. Has He come to that place again? We know He will in the last days.
The Psalmist looks forward to a revival
Vs. 6-12
Psalms 85:6 (KJV)
Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
Preachers frequently banter about whether God will revive us again before Jesus comes. Certainly, there will be a great revival when Jesus comes.
Either one would be welcome, the latter being my preference.
