For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
We are aware that the birthright blessing was originally intended for Jacob rather than Esau. Furthermore, if Esau had desired it, it would still have belonged to Jacob. It’s important to acknowledge that God has knowledge of all things before they occur. He understood Esau’s character even before Esau exhibited it. This can be likened to our sin nature – we sin because it’s inherent to our nature, and our sins serve as evidence of our nature. While this may seem circular, it is an undeniable reality.
Esau did not desire the birthright due to his nature, and because his nature did not incline him to want it, he was never meant to receive it. However, there came a day when he regretted his nature, yearning for the blessing he once disregarded. Regrettably, on that day, it was too late, and he could no longer attain it. Life presents moments when our choices become irreversible. Although God is always merciful and provides opportunities for forgiveness, grace, and fellowship, there are certain things that cannot be undone. Some consequences are unchangeable, regardless of the depth of sorrow, care, or seeking.
This underscores the importance of prioritizing a careful and dedicated relationship with God from the outset, rather than treating it as a last resort. Waiting until we’ve learned our lessons is not an acceptable approach. When you have sown a seed and are bound to reap the harvest, there is no need to worry. God’s love for you remains steadfast, and He is always ready to uplift you. Nevertheless, attempting to obtain from God what He has already determined you cannot have is not advisable. Esau, once very angry at Jacob, eventually let go of his anger. The greater importance lay in the brothers’ support for their parents, their love for one another, and their collective commitment to glorify God, rather than holding onto a lifelong grudge. The same principle applies to you and me.
