James 2:10 (KJV) Deciphering Divine Judgment

James 2:10 (KJV)

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

The context of the passage sits us in an assembly, making judgments. There is no question that our faith requires certain judgments be made.

  • We must judge before administering baptism[1]
  • We must judge before accepting into membership
  • We must judge before appointing to ministries[2]
  • We must judge before laying on of the hands of ordination[3]

There are judgments we make of both the world and of the conduct within the house of God.

1 Corinthians 6:2 (KJV)
Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

1 Timothy 3:15 (KJV)
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

It is appropriate that we recognize certain offices and positions such as the pastor, elders, husbands, etc. It’s no sin to give double honor[4] to those who watch for our souls.[5] It’s not sin for a wife to “reverence her husband.”[6]

But in the judgment of these matters, we are not to consider the financial station above the spiritual station. A man with money is not better qualified to lead in a church than a man without money if he lacks the qualifications of a true leader.

Deciphering Divine Judgment: Making Spiritual Discernments

[1] John the Baptist certainly did.

[2] Considering the Biblical qualifications of pastor and deacon

[3] 1 Timothy 4:14 (KJV)
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
1 Timothy 5:22 (KJV)
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.

[4] 1 Timothy 5:17 (KJV)
Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

[5] Hebrews 13:17 (KJV)
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

[6] Ephesians 5:33 (KJV)
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
